Land Use

Mount Washington is zoned for single-family residential homes and that is the overwhelming land use on the hill. Unlike the single-family residential subdivisions found in many other places in the Los Angeles region, Mount Washington features lots subdivided many years ago but developed mostly one lot at a time. The individual development of Mount Washington has attracted a uniquely diverse group of community residents that value the “close to nature” living so close to downtown Los Angeles.

This section of the MWHA website summarizes our organizational core values with respect to land use, provides an introduction to the key land use documents of the City of Los Angeles relevant to property in the community, and summaries current and past significant land use controversies in Mount Washington.

Current Issues

Councilmember Jose Huizar continues to  work with the Autry to reopen the Southwest Museum as the premiere location for exhibiting the collection created by Charles Lummis. Councilmember Huizar offered a number of possible ways  the City of Los Angeles could help the Autry including upwards of $20M in loans and grants. The Autry Board has so far rejected these offers but the Councilmember's staff indicate that he is still optimistic that he can positively impact the Autry's thinking on this issue. Read the letter that the Councilmember sent back in December that kicked off this latest round of trying to get the Autry to live up to the promises they made in the original Merger Agreement.
