What is MWHA?

Often, new organizations arise in times of crisis. After all, the United States itself was formed in response to the perceived unjust taxation and autocratic rule of the British crown. The Alliance was forged in the heat of a very controversial real estate development proposal by our long-time community neighbor, the Self-Realization Fellowship Church. When supporters of the Self-Realization Fellowship’s project (many of whom were dedicated members of the church who live here) took advantage of the weak bylaws of our former community association, the other members of our community were moved to dramatic action.

In response, alarmed homeowners formed the Alliance with strong bylaws and a code of ethical conduct. Literally hundreds of people who once belonged to the former community association, resigned from that organization and joined the Alliance. So the revolutionary spirit of our forefathers is not dead, it lives on at the MWHA. It is for this reason that the masthead of our newsletter, "The Alliance Times," is called "The Free Voice of Mt. Washington" and carries the quotation from Thomas Paine that "We have it in our power to begin the world over again."

The Alliance has matured since the community crisis that required its formation. The Board of Directors, listening to input from members of the Alliance, continues to work on a number of proactive, collaborative community improvement projects. The Alliance reaches out to our community partners in adjoining communities to work on broader issues of concern like transportation and preservation of open space.
